Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) became part of the district strategic plan for all schools pK-12 in 2019. Both work in concert with our MTSS model to enhance the capacity of our educational system from a universal, targeted, and intensive level.
Our Social Emotional Learning practices are both proactive and reactive. This includes: the use of SW-PBIS, Check In / Check Out, mentoring, calm classroom, restorative practices, research-based curriculums and programs from the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) like Second Step and the Be Nice program, utilization of trauma-informed practices, school-based mental health professionals at all buildings to intervene directly with students and connect families / students with resources in the community, long-standing contracts with local, outside agencies like CARE of Southeastern Macomb and Macomb County Community Mental Health. We are working on implementing intervention from Attendance Works. These practices are also embedded in to our student risk and threat assessment protocols.
